Introduction to Silversmithing

Objectives

To explain the materials, tools and techniques available to anyone interested in making jewellery out of copper, silver and gold.

The course will cover the basic groundwork in a small number of intensive sessions.

By the end of the course, the students should appreciate: · the basic properties of the materials; the various construction methods; · texturing and polishing techniques.

Syllabus

The course will consist of a series of talks, interspersed with demonstrations over three weeks with two weeks of practicals where the students can choose one of a number of items of silver jewellery to make.

Week 1 Metals - properties and shapes, cutting, filing, soldering and polishing.
Weeks 2 & 4 Practicals - choose one of a number of projects.
Week 3 Texturing, doming, raising, forging, casting methods and design
Week 5 Enamelling, assay, tools and time to finish off projects

 

Course fee £35 Students will have also have to pay the cost of the materials used on their projects. This could be as little as £4 per project.

Technique Workshops

Following on from the introduction course, there will be a series of sessions covering topics in more detail. For example, making brooch backs, cufflinks, chain making, casting, piercing saw work, different soldering techniques...... - your suggestions are welcome. Each workshop will cost an additional £3, ie £6 to include the evening workshop fee.
